Twitter Announces SMS Partnership with Bharti Airtel in India

airtel.pngTwitter announced that it has partnered with Bharti Airtel to bring Twitter SMS support to India. Bharti Airtel customers are now able to send tweets at the standard rate and receive them for free.

Twitter cites the abundance of mobile phones even in areas where most people do not have access to the Internet as the reason for its push to partner with mobile carriers in various countries, which it will continue to do as long as there is a demand. It also mentions the way that people use Twitter via mobile phones during emergencies:

“We have seen people use Twitter to help each other during fuel shortages, track the spread of wildfires, check in during earthquakes, organize major charitable events, spread urgent news efficiently around the world, and much more”.

Bharti Airtel customers in India can send “START” to 53000 to get started using Twitter on their mobile phones.
