Astronaut Timothy Creamer (@Astro_TJ) made the first unassisted tweet from space yesterday. Mike Massimino (@Astro_Mike) was previously credited to have done this, but his message was in fact sent to NASA officials on the ground, who then posted the tweet for him.
The technology that made this possible is NASA’s new Crew Support LAN system, which uses existing communication links to give crew members in space access to the Internet when the space station is communicating with the ground station. The crew is then able to remotely access a computer on the ground via an onboard laptop.
